Did You Choose the Right Alloy for the Woodworking Tool?
Did You Choose the Right Alloy for the Woodworking Tool?
Woodworking tools are mostly made of alloy tool steel. Some alloy elements are added to the steel to improve the toughness, hardness, and wear resistance. Here are some alloy materials used in woodworking tools.
Add a small amount of alloying elements to the steel to make it into alloy tool steel. In recent years, alloy tool steel has been widely used in the production of woodworking tools.
1. Carbon steel
Carbon steel has low cost, good cutting ability, good thermoplasticity, and very sharpness. It is an excellent material for making woodworking tools. However, this material also has shortcomings, has poor heat resistance. Its operating environment requires less than 300 degrees. If the temperature is too high, the hardness of the material and the quality of cutting operations will decrease. High-quality, high-grade steel with higher carbon content is often used to make cutters for equipment.
2. High-speed steel
High-speed steel increases the proportion of alloying elements in alloy steel, making it higher in hot hardness and wear resistance, making it better than carbon steel and alloy steel. The working environment of high-speed steel has increased to about 540 to 600 degrees.
3. Cemented carbide
It is mainly made of metal carbides and alloy elements mixed and fired. It has the advantages of heat resistance and high hardness. It can continue to work at about 800 to 1000 degrees, and its hardness exceeds that of carbon steel. Cemented carbide is currently mainly used in the automated production process of wood-based panels and wood processing. However, cemented carbide materials are brittle and easy to break, so they cannot be sharpened too sharply.
4. Diamond
The diamond used in tool manufacturing is synthetic, but the chemical structure of the two is the same. Its strength and toughness are higher than natural diamond, and its hardness is weaker than natural diamond. Compared with other materials, diamond is more heat-resistant, wear-resistant, and has a longer service life. A diamond composite blade is a tool commonly used in woodworking for cutting laminate flooring, solid wood composite flooring, bamboo flooring, and solid wood doors.
