How to Make A Round Shank Bit

Round Shank Bits, attached to the roadheader machine, are powerful tools in the oilfield and applied to digging a tunnel before mining. A round shank bit consists of a tooth body and tungsten carbide buttons. And many round shank bits will be installed on a roadheader machine in a helical way. Because of tungsten carbide buttons’ good hardness, wear resistance, and impact resistance, round shank bits work in high productivity. There are procedures to forge cemented carbide buttons in a tooth body:

1. Cladding a layer of cermets;

2. Hot welding;

3. Heat treatment;

4. Blasting;

5. Package.

1. Cladding a layer of cermets;

Before workers forge a tungsten carbide into a tooth body, they may clad a layer of cermets first. They may operate the PTA-surfacing system to put the super wear resistance materials on the tooth body by the plasma cladding strengthening technology. With a layer of super wear resistance materials on the surface of the tooth body, it will be difficult to break the tooth body in the following procedures. Then workers will grind the inner hole to prepare for the next step.

2. Hot welding;

Hot welding is the primary part of the whole procedure. Workers will put two pieces of copper steel and some flux paste on the inner hole of the tooth body. Then weld the tungsten carbide buttons in the inner holes. This process asks for a high-temperature environment. During the forging, some flux paste will overflow along with the surface of the tooth body. At this moment, the plasma layer functions. If there is no plasma layer, the surface of the tooth body may be damaged or stained.

3. Heat treatment;

In the chain belt walking furnace, the round shank bits with tungsten carbide buttons will be treated at a high temperature to improve the overall properties.

4. Shot blasting;

Workers will operate a crawler-type shot blast machine, also called a tumblast machine, to deal with round shank bits for shot blasting, scale removal, and surface strengthening.

5. Package.

After the procedures above and quality check, every round shank bit met customers’ requirements will be packed carefully and waited for transportation.
