The Shapes and Types of End Mill
The Shapes and Types of End Mill
End Mill is one kind of milling cutter to do the process of removing metal by CNC Milling machines. There are various diameters, flutes, lengths, and shapes to choose from. Here is a short overview of the main ones.
1. Square end mills
Square end mills, also known as "flat end mills", are the most common ones and can be used for many milling applications, including slotting, profiling, and plunge cutting.
2. Corner-radius end mills
This shape of the end mill has slightly rounded corners that help distribute cutting forces evenly to prevent damage to the end mill and extend its life. They can create flat-bottomed grooves with slightly rounded inside corners.
Roughing end mills are used to quickly remove large amounts of material during heavy operations. Their design allows for little to no vibration but leaves a rougher finish.
3. Ball nose end mills
The end flutes of Ball Nose End Mill is with no flat bottom. Ball nose mills are used for contour milling, shallow pocketing and contouring applications, etc. They are especially good for 3D contouring because they leave a nice rounded edge.
4. Tapered end mills
Also known as pencil end mills and conical end mills, these names are used to describe the shape of its flute. This type is a center-cutting tool that can be used for plunging and is designed to machine angled slots. They are generally used in die-casts and molds. They can also produce grooves, holes, or side-milling with a slope angle.
5. T-slot end mills
T-slot end mills can easily cut accurate keyways and T-slots to create working tables or other similar applications.
6. Long Neck End Mill:
The design is reduced the shank diameter behind the flute length is used to avoid the workpiece, which is ideal for deep slotting (deep pocketing).
There are multiple types of end mills, each designed with a variety of different factors to enable you to choose the right one to match the material you’re working on, and the type of project you’re going to use it for.
