Types of CBN Cutters

CBN cutters are made of cubic boron nitrite. They have a lot of characteristics, such as:

1.The hardness of cubic boron nitrite cutter is only lower than that of diamonds. And cubic boron nitrite has better wear resistance and can achieve longer working life;

2.CBN cutters have higher heat resistance, and can still retain its stable physical properties under high temperature, which provides the condition of high speed and high temperature cutting;

3.CBN cutters are chemically stable, and has high ability to against oxygen. It can keep its stable chemical properties even understand 1000℃;

4.The good thermal conductivity of CBN tools can make the heat from the tip of the tool spread out quickly, which is beneficial to the improvement of the machining accuracy of the workpiece.

5.The low friction coefficient of the CBN tool makes the blade have excellent anti-bonding ability, which is conducive to improving the quality of the processed surface.

CBN cutters have three main types, and they are solid CBN tool, PCBN inserts, and brazing CBN inserts.

(1) Solid CBN tool

For processing cast iron materials with less than 10% ferrite, solid CBN cutting tools provide good wear resistance and impact resistance. It may be used for finishing as well as rough machining with a wide margin, which considerably increases machining efficiency and lowers machining costs. This type of cutting tool will become more popular with customers as high-hardness casting production increases, and market share will also experience significant growth in the coming years.

(2) PCBN Insert

The CBN material is welded onto the cutting edge of the blade, and the PCBN cutting tool should be used with a better-cemented carbide substrate. It can achieve good smoothness and dimensional accuracy and has good wear resistance. It is mostly used for finishing procedures with a hardness over HRC45 and a small margin.

(3) Brazing CBN Insert

One side of the Brazing CBN Insert features several cutting edges thanks to its integral top surface, which is sintered on a carbide substrate. This type of cutting tool may be manufactured into multiple edges, which significantly lowers processing costs and makes it less expensive than compound cutting tools. But the finishing phase is where it is mostly used.
